If you have ever created a digital product to sell on the internet, then what I am about to tell you is something that I know for a fact you do not want to hear.
Not everyone who is using your product right now paid for it.
Some of those people simply stole it and there's not a darned thing you can do about it.
Maybe you are in denial and think that no one's ever stolen from you.
Sorry, but I hate to burst your bubble, but almost as soon as you create your product or there are thieves out there hunting you down.
And, 99 times out of every 100, they will find you.
The method that most internet marketers use to deliver their products to customers is open to abuse.
Take this standard scenario as an illustration.
You create your product and put up a web page to sell it, or perhaps you bought a resale rights or private label rights product and put up the sales pages that came with the product.
In either case, in this situation, once someone makes a purchase, they are re-directed to a download page on your site to access to the products that they just bought.
That page has a web address or url at the top, right?
What is to stop that purchaser passing on that address to their best friend?
Heck, maybe they don't even see it as doing anything wrong, but effectively, as soon as they pass on that download link address, they are enabling their friend to steal your product.
That's wrong in anyone's book, right?
But, let's just say that this kind of thing is relatively innocent. They were only doing a friend a favor, and that's what friends are supposed to do, so maybe no harm was meant.
If so, how about this?
I can tell you for a fact that there are a good number of jerks out there on the internet right now. Maybe that won't come as a complete surprise.
Jerks exist for one reason and one reason only, to cause trouble for other people. Say that one of them buys and downloads your product.
There are two things that will happen next (and I say this from bitter experience).
Firstly, our friend will download your product.
Then, if he is a really patient jerk, he might wait for 24 hours before asking for a refund. And, if you are selling through Clickbank he will get that refund immediately, no questions asked.
You think that the story ends there, that the whole sad affair is now safely put to bed?
No chance!
That will almost certainly not be good enough for our friend Mr. Jerk.
No matter how much you try to help and co-operate with him (it is always him, by the way) you will never be able to satisfy him, or keep him happy.
Jerks like this guy don't do happy - complaining and moaning are what they specialize in.
So, any guesses what might happen next?
Simple! As a way of showing how displeased he is with you, and to demonstrate to the world at large just what a smart cookie he is, he'll post your download link on some spammy forum that he's a member of.
Presto, now Mr. Jerk and all his equally jerky friends have your product, and all without paying a penny!
And the chances are very high that you will never really know just how many pirated copies of your product there are out there in the market right now.
Sure, you can run a basic tracking operation by keeping an eye on the statistics within the control panel of your website, but the information that you get there is not really going to be of much use to you.
For example, even if you can find the IP address of someone who appears to have downloaded your product without authorization or making a payment, what are you going to do about it?
Don't think that it happens?
Trust me, people get ripped off like this every single day.
